The 1990s was a decade of making me physically strong. Carrying heavy computer boxes, monitors and printers up and down stairs from office to home and back again and of course going out to see clients. Laptops and notebooks were still a distant dream. Our family business sold Programmable Logic Controllers and wrote the required software to make them work. Not a programmer myself I still got to learn quite a bit of how they worked as I used to plan and work at the various trade exhibitions and help with quotations etc.
I got quite a fright when I realised that I have been using computers for more than 30 years. In 1985 my first “computer” was an enormous black box attached with a thick cable to what I think was an IBM Golfball Wordprocessor. Plastic sheets which looked like X-ray materials slotted into this thick black box and somehow captured what I was typing and saved my work. Huge and extremely difficult to move around this didn't last too long in my home.
