- Your grandparents passed matric without access to Google!
- The amount of computing power used to land the astronauts on the moon was less than that found in your average cell phone
- The first heart transplant was done without the aid of computers
Having said all that, we do live in a different world. A world that is moving so fast it is frightening for those who missed out on learning how to use a computer.
The other day I read an article which made me sit up and think. If you are studying today and do not have access to or knowledge about computers and the internet you are worse off than you would have been 10 years ago. A decade ago you could have gone to a library and there would have been up to date Encyclopaedias where you could look up the information you needed. They don’t print these anymore.
In the “good old days” we would go to the bank or building society and conduct all our money business with a real human. Bills were paid in cash or cheques. Now we are penalised for using cash and cheques are a dirty word. We now transact via our cellphones and the internet. We file our taxes using e-filing. Our postal system is beyond a joke so writing a "proper" letter is no longer worth the effort.
Print newspapers and magazines are dying. Sad but true. I can't actually remember the last time I bought a newspaper and yet 2 a day were my standard fare for so many years.
Our children and grandchildren have emigrated or live far away and we long to be be able to chat to them and see their faces and feel part of their lives.
Do you feel left out when friends and family talk about Facebook and how they have caught up with their old school friends?
Are you longing to learn about computers, how to use the internet, social media etc but don’t want to sit in a formal classroom listening to stuff that is not relevant to your needs?
Would you like to be able to write your memories and share them with friends and families by having your own blog?
If you are in the Durban / Pietermaritzburg area you can either come to me or I will come to you. Alternatively I have an option where we can chat through a problem via Skype, Facebook or Google Chat.
PS: If you have a parent or grandparent or anyone else who would like some help please tell them about me. Thanks so much!
